“Look, I don’t have some grand mission statement. I just know what it feels like to decide that you are taking your own life, and then deciding not to.  That’s a real walk.  What saved my life was my love for another person.  My daughter.  And that fact is in my face all the time.  That people save other people.  Same thing with The Lifted Project.  People lift other people.  I’ve been really sick, but I have also seen glory.  So now I do this… all of it. The music, the conversations, the caregiving, the mental health stuff, the show… Home From Here exists because I want people to know they have choices.  I want people to know that people can do good.  That none of us are better.   That someone’s out here still fumbling through it too.”

If you’ve ever been at a restaurant in the Hudson Valley and heard James Taylor’s ghost playing live—or what felt like it—you may have encountered John Burton before ever knowing his name. If you’ve tuned into a podcast hoping for something funny, raw, healing, and real, and found yourself unexpectedly crying in the parking lot of your grocery store, you’ve probably met him there too. Burton is everywhere—and somehow still entirely present. Welcome to Johnversations: Burton Bonus Tracks—a twice-monthly dive into the life, work, music, and mind of one of the most fascinating, multi-hyphenate humans the Hudson Valley has ever called its own.

John Burton is not a brand. He’s not a personality. He’s not even just a podcast host, though he happens to helm Home From Here, the most popular podcast in the Hudson Valley, a globally ranked top 10 podcast on Mix Cloud —and arguably one of the most emotionally resonant shows on the global podcasting stage. What he is, and what I’ve come to discover in over a year of trailing, interviewing, and often simply listening to him, is a full-blown experience. One moment he’s performing an intimate solo acoustic set at a steakhouse; the next, he’s in studio recording a suicide prevention special. He’s equal parts artist and advocate, speaker and listener, father and caregiver, jokester and philosopher.

And that’s why this column exists. Because no one else is quite doing what John Burton is doing—and because he keeps doing more.

Home From Here: A Soundtrack for the Soul

Let’s start with Home From Here, the gravitational center of the Burton universe. If you haven’t yet tuned in, do it now—then come back and read this. With a fiercely loyal listener base, Home From Here is part storytelling, part confessional, part interview show, and part therapy session. It has catapulted Burton into a stratosphere usually reserved for NPR favorites, but without the polish and with a lot more punch. The show now has its own dedicated studio in Wappingers Falls, where Burton records solo episodes and interviews with everyone from cancer surgeons to comedians, mental health activists to musicians.

The Lifted Project: Where Music Meets Meaning

While Home From Here might be Burton’s heart, The Lifted Project is his soul. A collaborative musical initiative featuring a rotating cast of Hudson Valley musicians, The Lifted Project raises funds and awareness for local nonprofits. One of its flagship songs, “Won’t Be Broken,” has become something of an anthem—soaring, hopeful, and completely original.

But here’s what makes The Lifted Project so special: it’s not just charity with a melody. It’s community in action. Burton organizes massive group performances, open to singers from all walks of life, with the goal of uniting people through song and cause. No rehearsals, just trust. Just spirit. Just John.

James’s Warriors and The CareGiverCast: Giving Voice to the Unspoken

John Burton doesn’t stop at one podcast—or even two. The James’s Warriors Podcast, co-hosted with Donna Thomas and Dawn Cavaccini, is a fiercely tender exploration of suicide loss, grief, and the people left to carry on. Named in memory of Donna’s son, James, the show navigates unspeakable pain with grace and grit. Burton’s presence is key—not just as a host, but as someone who knows the terrain of caregiving, of heartbreak, of staying.

Then there’s The CareGiverCast, a podcast created in partnership with THANC (Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer Foundation). This show, deeply informed by Burton’s own experience caring for his wife, Trish, through her cancer diagnosis and recovery, is nothing short of essential listening for anyone supporting a loved one through illness. Burton’s voice—gentle, vulnerable, fiercely grounded—offers both comfort and clarity. It’s less a podcast than a lifeline.

A Soundtrack of Fingerstyle & Feeling

Let’s not forget: John Burton is also a musician. A damn good one. If you catch him live—whether at Joseph’s Italian Steakhouse or Paula’s Runway Café—you’re likely to hear intricate fingerstyle guitar that channels James Taylor and then wanders somewhere completely Burtonesque. His Takamine AN10s are extensions of his body, and his voice—rich, worn, honest—feels like an old friend.

His original compositions are story-songs, equal parts lullaby and anthem. Whether he’s covering “Fire and Rain” or playing something he wrote at 3am during a dark night of the soul, his performances always feel less like concerts and more like conversations. Intimate. Immediate. Alive.

A Caregiver’s Compass

What gives Burton’s work such astonishing depth is, perhaps, his caregiving journey. When Trish Burton was diagnosed with cancer, John became more than a husband—he became a full-time caregiver, nurse, advocate, and emotional anchor. The experience changed him. It deepened his empathy, sharpened his storytelling, and reinforced his belief that no one should have to go through hard things alone.

That belief now echoes through everything he does—from his podcasts to his music to the random acts of kindness his fans know all too well. (Yes, he will show up at your benefit concert. Yes, he will bring his guitar.)

Father First, Always

In the many hours I’ve spent speaking with and observing John, the thing he returns to most isn’t a song, a show, or even a philosophy—it’s his daughter. Their relationship, which he keeps largely private, radiates through his stories with a warmth that feels rare and grounding. He is the father who shows up. Who listens. Who makes time. And in every performance, in every podcast, in every laugh, you can feel her influence like a steadying hand on his shoulder.

A Social Media Force of Nature

For someone so rooted in sincerity, it’s almost shocking how good Burton is at social media. His Facebook routinely outperforms even major Hudson Valley media outlets like Chronogram and Hudson Valley Magazine in terms of monthly reach and engagement. But instead of content for clicks, Burton posts to connect. You’ll see clips from Home From Here, behind-the-scenes music moments, his one poignant essays, calls for community action, and the occasional dad joke. It’s curated chaos, and it works.

Why I’m Writing This Column

So why a column? Why now? Because John Burton keeps doing new things that deserve to be followed. Because in an age of influencers, he remains an inspirer. Because when someone bridges art and advocacy, performance and presence, grief and grace, we ought to take notice. Because this isn’t just one man’s story—it’s a mirror for how we might live our own lives more meaningfully.

Twice a month, I’ll be peeling back another layer—sometimes with John’s words, sometimes through the voices of those he’s impacted. You’ll read about his latest songs, his upcoming guests, the things keeping him up at night and the projects lighting his fire. There will be stories. There will be music. There will be tears and laughter and, I suspect, a few surprises.

So welcome to Johnversations: Burton Bonus Tracks. It’s going to be a ride.
