Alzheimer’s Project- Dealing With Dementia (June 2019)

Issue Two- June 2019:

By Mercedes Barreto

The Alzheimer’s Project is a real solution and alternative for those suffering from memory disorders and conditions in The Big Bend Area. Until a cure is found, this organization vows to continue its efforts to bring comfort & support to those with memory disorders.

What began this organization?

What ignited its mission & purpose?

“The organization started at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church. Reverend John Fletcher recognized that caregivers in his congregation needed support and a break from everyday caregiving.

This ministry of providing respite once a month grew into a not for profit organization in 1992. The mission of the organization is to provide comfort, support, and assistance to persons with memory disorders and their caregivers across The Big Bend Area.

How can someone benefit from assistance via your organization?

“Caregivers are offered the opportunity for support services like the day respite program that provides caregivers six hours to do attend to whatever they need to take care of by themselves while their loved one attends a six-hour program of activities like music, art, games, etc. Support groups are held to provide caregivers support from their peers and to learn more about the disease and tips to cope.

‘Powerful Tools For Caregivers’ is a six-week course that teaches caregivers how to take care of themselves and introduces them to the resources in the community.

‘Dealing With Dementia’ is a 3-hour course that walks caregivers through a resource binder developed by the Rosalyn Carter Institute. This book covers everything from A to Z about caregiving. We provide in-home respite for individuals further along in their journey. In addition, a program called ‘Project Lifesaver’ provides GPS bracelets to those who have the propensity to wander.”

What would be the main goal to achieve and accomplish in a given time for the Alzheimer’s Project?

“The goal of the Alzheimer’s Project is to provide support services to increase the quality of life for both the caregiver and the person living with the disease. We will do this until a cure is discovered.”

Why should others be concerned and involved with the main purpose of the organization throughout society?

“One in 3 individuals over the age of 65 is projected to develop dementia. This is a huge burden for the family but also for our state and country to provide resources to assist families through services within the community or through a facility. The cost for medication, medical supplies, hospitalizations, medical supplies, and care in the home or facility places a burden on the family but also the health care system…”

If you could send a message to someone needing help from your organization right now with no time to waste, what would that message be, & why?

“Don’t walk this journey alone, it is a journey that is different and unique for each family, call The Alzheimer’s Project, research resources in the community, and don’t be hesitant to ask for help.”
