Q&A
For readers discovering your music for the first time, how would you describe the heart of the AnnaBelle Swift sound?
“What a beautiful question. The overall “heart of my sound” could best be described as sincere, gentle, intimate, to name a few of its qualities. My music is meant to connect, teach, and inspire. It will surely only continue to evolve, but these are the traits I believe will remain constant and steady, the guiding post for my musical inclinations and the listener experience. No matter what, I aim to take a playful approach toward songwriting and singing, and allow the music to speak for itself—to whisper, to rise, to enunciate, to form its shape into a sound that I hope feels emotionally resonant and true to the listener.”

You blend elements of folk, Americana, and jazz in your work. Which artists or musical influences have had the biggest impact on your creative journey?
“My very first released song, a cover of “Come Away with Me,” was inspired by the very talented Norah Jones. I thought what better cover to play around with than this jazzy song (with our own twist) that I learned to sing as a foundation for my vocal abilities. And then came the wonderful Alison Krauss with “When You Say Nothing at All,” that I covered for my next release. Also inspiring along the way have been artists like Joan Baez (e.g., she inspired the bravado for my cover of “Imagine”), Jewel, John Denver, Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morissette, and so on and so forth. Interestingly, as I continue to develop my artistry, I find myself shifting more into the adult contemporary genre, inspired by artists like Celine Dion—she will always remain timeless. But truly, I am inspired by many different kinds of artists, including folks like Weird Al and Lady Gaga and Aurora, etc. (on Weird Al, I have a number of parody ideas for him, should he ever be in need, and hats off to him for still touring after 40+ years). And I only continue to discover amazing artists all the time who keep me inspired and joyful about music!”
Your album Messages of Hope and Inspiration: Music for the Soul carries a very uplifting message. What inspired the overall concept behind the project?
“As a developing artist, I have allowed myself to remain open to song ideas and titles, choosing whatever sentiment feels most fitting in the moment when creating my music. This album title came to me early on while I was still brainstorming potential songs to include in the album as well as a corresponding theme I could rely on no matter which songs ultimately materialized. So far the title has remained with me, withstanding the test of time. I think what initially inspired me to focus on the theme of hope and inspiration (which along with music is medicine for the soul, in my book) is how we live in a world of polarities, one that requires us to seek what I believe is the sweet spot of “balance.” My music is meant to help pinpoint the sweet spot by speaking to real-life scenarios (e.g., in “Lovebirds,” how long-term couples may start to struggle when they allow the mundane to become their routine, or in “Open Your Heart,” how life can feel increasingly rough and tumble), while weighing those challenges against the prospect of better times, by remaining positive, optimistic, and inspiring. Simply put, I aspire to make the world a better place through my music, to help create a world filled with Heart-Minded Integrity—one where we live in wholeness, heart and mind aligned, embodying both rational clarity and heartfelt wisdom in how we show up in the world. My album “Messages of Hope and Inspiration—Music for the Soul” is meant to carry the torch forward in a way that I hope feels inviting and affirming.”

Many of your songs focus on themes of hope, connection, and positivity. Why are those themes particularly important to you as a songwriter?
“Unexpectedly to me, perhaps what has been most meaningful and gratifying about this process of expanding from lawyer to artist, is how I have developed as a person. Music and my artistry have been a gentle guide to me, helping to shape me into what I believe is becoming the best version of myself, while also serving as my creative outlet. My introverted, analytical mind to someone more socially present and available for connection. Music has truly come to be so special to me and operates on many levels of my psyche, as my own personal remedy/medicine. And hope, connection, and positivity are perhaps what I intuitively feel are the counterbalances that I need in my own life, and ones that I believe can only benefit the world at large. Intent on becoming self-actualized, my personal aim is to become the healthiest version of positivity I can develop (not in a toxic positive way, but in a genuine, tempered way) and to serve as an example/role model for anyone struggling to find that inner peace and stability that appears to be generated from within. We are all always being leaders whether we recognize it or not, through the example we set. I take that role seriously and aim to spread positivity, hope, and connection in the best way I know possible: through the magic of music.”
What does your songwriting process typically look like—from the first spark of inspiration to the finished recording?
“You have very accurately described the first ingredient of the process: that first spark of inspiration. I have discovered that I can create lyrics on the spot, as my own homework assignment if you will, e.g., if a verse needs to be added or changed, but the initial concept for the song always comes through that “spark of inspiration,” just in the moment, when I think “ooh that would make for a good song.” (For example, for my first original song “Lovebirds,” the line “we’re just a couple of lovebirds, you and I” was inspired by a text message to my husband.) But the inspiration could come at anytime, anywhere—in the shower, in the car, in the morning, after watching a musician documentary, particularly when I am most relaxed in my mind but still active and alert, or when I need to hear the comfort of the song’s message like with “Open Your Heart.” The main lyric is what comes to me first, followed by the main melody. And then I allow the song to take shape, to build a story, with a beginning that builds context, a middle that fleshes out the message of the song, and an end that reinforces and hopefully feels like a call to action. To give two polar opposite examples of my song creation process: My latest release “Belong” took multiple years to fully write and develop (and was finished late into the night, or should I say morning hours, after watching “Piece by Piece,” an amazing documentary by Pharrell Williams). It is my flagship song, my anchoring one that shows the world I don’t need anyone’s invitation (or even permission) other than my own to claim this identity as an artist. “Belong” took time to develop and emerge, just like my overall artistry. Compare this to my next song that’s in the works that was written during the course of just a roughly 2-hour shower (I love my showers), from start to finish. I believe I was able to write this newest song in such a short time frame (comparatively speaking) because it was my medicine for that day. Music heals and seems to come to me when I need it most. By remaining open and discerning, I work to capture any inspired thoughts that present themselves.”

How do you hope listeners feel after spending time with your music?
“Soothed. Comforted. More at peace. The ultimate aim with my music is to create a safe space for the listener, one that feels supportive, uplifting, and inspiring.”
Where can we hear more of your music, and why should we do so? What makes AnnaBelle Swift iconic for these times?
“My music is available on all major streaming platforms (Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, etc.). Plus my website: www.annabelleswift.com .
One thing we can all surely agree on is that we live in a chaotic world, one seemingly plagued by separation, competition, and mistrust. My music is meant to help unify and remind us we can (and do) live in a beautiful world. Media shapes and is shaped by us, so what better platform to use to spread one’s message and aim to be a guiding light. Thank you for reading and for listening!”
Anything to add here?
“Many thanks for this opportunity to share the process behind my music and for your wonderful questions. I appreciate how our paths have crossed. It is these types of collaborations that make the journey so meaningful and refreshing. Thank your for providing a wonderful platform to help celebrate art in one of its truest forms.”
