Issue Seventeen- September 2021:

By Mercedes Barreto

To perform is a certain skill and a certain concept. But have you ever considered that live performance is not always defaulted to performing in itself? Nowadays with our concurrent technologies, broadcasting and performing do not have to be live at the moment. Brad  Guitar Wilson dedicates his time and musical skills to provide a great live show, which entertains and enthralls, a show for the masses. You can read all about it in this guided yet informative article.

What are some recent achievements lately that you feel most proud of, which you would like to share with a reading crowd? Why so?

“I am completing the recording and the photo session for my new album, entitled Nepenthe. A wonderful twelve-song project inspired by the California coast near the town of Big Sur. Mixed by one of the best in the record business, Francis Buckley. I love the way it is sounding!! I currently present a streaming show called The Californian online every two weeks on Fridays at 8 PM, Pacific Time, and available on-demand all weekend. This 25-minute performance is a fun time for my songs and stories that I can share with everyone around the world. It is presented by Yippee Ki Ay Blues. I am touring throughout California which included four California shows earlier this month with the legendary band, Chicago. I tour with my trio that includes a bass player and drummer, or as a solo artist with acoustic guitars.”

How has your time been getting through Covid and the pandemic lately as an artist? Have you been on tour, making music, and has this musical routine been affected in a good or bad way? How so, if applicable?

“Covid stopped the live shows in 2020. However, during that time, I wrote the songs for Nepenthe and recorded them, so it was time well spent. I have also built the streaming for the show The Californian to reach out to my audience. Although it was a difficult time, I received a government grant that helped me financially. I started performing again slowly as a solo acoustic artist at outside events and after vaccination, I have returned to a full schedule.”

What are just two words that describe your desire to get out into the world, and make more music?

“Loving Life!  In detail? The world is full of wonders, both big and small. I am amazed every day with all of the wonders around me and feel so much joy to be here.”

What is the type of crowd you would share your music with first?

“My audience loves the guitar and enjoys songs with lead guitar playing. Lots of blues music fans too. I hope my lyrics create a common bond as they listen to my songs.”

If you could pick the audience you first performed for tomorrow?

“I like people and enjoy visiting with them. Most audiences love to sing along and dance during my shows.”

When you get on a stage, do you feel you have gained experience?

“Yes, my many years of performing make me feel comfortable in front of an audience of thousands of people in an arena.”

How much experience have you obtained from performing?

“I have performed on a stage since I was young, learning to play guitar and to sing at the same time. I write my own songs, so it allows me to share how I feel. Over the years, you learn how to build and pace a good music program…presenting a cool show.”

What measures success for you?

“Good health, playing guitar and singing really well. Success is doing what you love every day.”

Where can we find your music?

Spotify, Apple, CD Baby, Pandora, www.bradwilsonlive.com, and all music outlets around the world on the Internet.”

Why should we do so?

“I like to feel that my music and songs are timeless and appeal to everyone. Sometimes, just one song will become very important to someone and they will listen to it many times for years.”

What makes your latest music special, in a world full of music?

“My new album is called Nepenthe. The songs were written during an incredibly emotional time, 2019 – 2021. Big Sur and the California central coast is a fantastically beautiful place. Because of the pandemic, the most beautiful locations were quiet with no visitors. I wrote songs with a romantic viewpoint, often thinking of how it must have been there during another time. For example, in the 1960s, when few knew about Big Sur and discovered the area by chance, many falling in love with Big Sur and feeling what the great Greek writer Homer describes as nepenthe – a feeling for nature so strong it becomes an aphrodisiac or kind of a high with natural joy.”

Could you tell us more about your live streaming shows, and what we can expect to see?

“I am performing in a style like a TV show. We have a set, lights, two cameras, and my long-time bass player friend, Brian Beal, joins me on my songs. I have pre-recorded drums to fill out the songs and often other instruments pre-recorded from my album recording sessions. I like to talk about my songs and traveling around California and performing shows with, for example, the legendary band, Chicago. I use acoustic guitars and the real star of the show is my white Fender electric guitar named Polar Bear. My guitar, Polar Bear, sounds amazing and can midi relay the notes to a computer which can add an orchestra string section and keyboards. It’s really incredible and the worldwide guitar fans love Polar Bear! I invite your readers to catch The Californian and enjoy songs from my new album and get to know me better from watching the show.”

Anything you might add here?
