Dr. Joanne Magro: The Physician-Model Championing Confidence, Addiction Recovery, and Women’s Empowerment
Dr. Joanne Magro is redefining what it means to be a woman of substance and strength in today’s world. A remarkable fusion of science and style, Dr. Magro is both a seasoned physician and a successful model—a combination that may seem unconventional, yet perfectly reflects her mission: to empower, uplift, and inspire.
After a long and impactful career in emergency medicine, Dr. Magro recently made the bold decision to step away from the ER. But retirement for her isn’t about slowing down—it’s about redirecting her energy where it’s needed most. She is now dedicating herself to supporting individuals grappling with the devastating impact of the opioid crisis, an epidemic that continues to take an overwhelming toll on communities across North America.
With firsthand experience treating overdose cases and witnessing the trauma families endure, Dr. Magro understands the urgent need for compassionate care and practical solutions. Her new path focuses on working closely with addicts and those vulnerable due to loss of healthcare access, aiming to bring both medical insight and emotional support to those navigating recovery. “Addiction is not a moral failing—it’s a medical and societal issue,” Dr. Magro emphasizes. “We need to address it with humanity, not judgment.”
But her mission doesn’t stop there.
“I’d like to introduce myself, as I am new to this platform. My name is Dr. Joanne Magro, and I’ve been an emergency room doctor for 27 years. I’ve loved every minute of my job but have always been a “Fashionista” at heart. My career has been the good, the bad, and the ugly, which I will be sharing with you during my series of columns, but I thought I would start off with some fun satire as I was always able to mix “Playing God” with some fashion to add levity to the ups and downs of a day in the ER.
I wanted to title this one series “The Power of the Stiletto.” So…here I am ankle-deep in the emergency department, packed tighter than a fashionably late diva at a Parisian show. My scrubs had been selected with just the right hint of sassiness, but…it was the stiletto heels that truly elevated me above the chaos below. Yes, you surely heard it right. STILETTOS in the ER-one might think I was trying to moonlight as a model—which I was while performing life-and-death procedures—but hear me out. These little wonders are my secret superpower, the magic wand I wield to dazzle ‘em all while maintaining that all-important air of authority that’s so crucial when facing a room full of panicking patients and wide-eyed medical students and interns. Let’s be honest: ER floors are not known for their aesthetic charm.

“Why a stiletto?” I hear you asking. Simple. They are the Cinderella slippers of the medical realm, transforming me from mere mortal to an authoritative force to be reckoned with amidst the high-stakes drama.
First and foremost, there’s a psychological boost while allowing myself to maintain my femininity. Back in the day, emergency room doctors were a “male-dominated” field. Well, now it was my turn to compete with the Almighty and God complex males. So…imagine commanding attention while issuing orders like “STAT!” or “Get me a crash cart!” in a voice that quivers with authority, all while you’re balancing on your Christian Louboutins!!! The shoes may be high, but they gave me that soaring confidence. Yes, I did just save a life with the right shoes; strutting that “look at me” energy speaks volumes!
Of course, as with all great power moves, there’s a critical caveat: MAINTAINING BALANCE, as I also looked at this as a way to practice walking down a runway one day and becoming a REAL Model. If I could do this darting through an ER while avoiding spilled fluids, nurses, and rouge gurneys all over the place, I surely can walk a runway. I was often joking around in the break room while simultaneously flipping through the latest fashion publications, as though checking for bulletins on new medical procedures. The patients’ anxiety levels dip lower than my heel’s height, and it’s just a pure win-win. Do I recommend Stiletto’s for everyone?
Absolutely not! It’s reserved for select individuals- the BOLD, the BRAVE, and those who’ve built their foot strength through years of practice navigating the hottest runway of all: the ER. Who would’ve thought that one day I would be that aspiring model and be able to tackle my future dreams.
In closing, while my colleagues were scrambling for some semblance of comfort in chunky sneakers, I was twirling around amidst the chaos, silently channeling my inner supermodel, armed with finesse and a fierce pair of STILETTOS! They say that shoes can make a statement…

Ladies and gentlemen, let my stilettos be the pen that scripted my own version of ER magic- a blend of style chaos, all wrapped up into one unshakable package. So remember, the next time you find yourself in a sticky situation, consider a little heel power. Just don’t trip and create your own reality show. “Real Doctors of the Emergency Room.” And contrary to popular belief, I assure you, you won’t find stilettos in the emergency kit!
Stay tuned for more crypts and fashion as we are one.” Women Empowering Women”. Anything is possible if we all lift each other up and maintain our sisterhood and unity.”
As a model and advocate, Dr. Magro is also breaking barriers in the fashion and wellness industries—especially for women over 40, 50, and beyond. Her message is clear: aging does not mean disappearing. Through her visibility and voice, she’s reclaiming femininity, sexuality, and self-worth for older women, many of whom feel sidelined by traditional beauty standards and societal expectations.
“Femininity doesn’t expire,” says Dr. Magro. “And neither does our right to feel beautiful, seen, and confident. I want women—and men—to know they can reawaken their identity at any age.”
Dr. Magro’s journey is a powerful testament to reinvention and purpose. She is proof that you can wear a white coat and walk the runway, fight addiction stigma and embrace beauty, heal others and still evolve yourself. In a world in desperate need of authentic role models, she is leading by example—elegantly and fearlessly.
Whether she’s consulting with a patient, walking a fashion show, or speaking to a room full of women seeking renewal, Dr. Joanne Magro is doing more than just “having it all”—she’s giving it back.

I enjoyed this and admire your ability to manage your position as an ER Doctor in stilettos. Congrats, I have trouble with zip boots and clogs. I love your sense of fashion. I have enjoyed your articles so much. Thank you for allowing us a glance into the life and excitement of a female working in the world of God complex males in the ER. I highly support females supporting each other and especially in the world of addiction. Drug companies and society as a whole must accept the burden of addiction.
