True Mission- Helping the Homeless (June 2019)

Issue Two- June 2019:

By Mercedes Barreto

True Mission is an organization dedicated to providing the essentials of survival to the homeless across America. They give back through their efforts to feed, clothe, and help those who consider True Mission a true and real blessing, especially to those in a time of need.

What does it mean for you to have started this organization? To others?
“Starting True Mission is a means of giving back!
In the spirit of volunteerism, we can assist others in need with grateful hearts; thankful for all God has blessed us with personally. No one is exempt from the struggles of daily living, but we feel if we can lend a hand to others, we should!  We strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others, give hope and share a smile or hug to let them know they are cared for.”
Who has the organization helped, with the meals they’ve provided?
“We serve on average 60 meals each feed directly on the streets of Downtown Detroit and surrounding areas. Most of the people we feed are homeless or living short-term in city shelters.
We have also hosted events serving meals inside these shelters, feeding 150-300 people who reside there.”
What is the most rewarding part of every day for your organization?
“It is an extremely fulfilling feeling knowing you have made an impact on someone’s day in some small way. When you pass along a meal, and you are told “thank you, I haven’t eaten yet today, God Bless you for what you all do for us.”.
It encourages us to want to do more and reach higher goals. Seeing someone who is literally sleeping on the ground in the cold with little or no shelter breaks your heart.
No one should have to endure nights like that, but being able to give them warm clothing, boots, a sleeping bag or tent makes you feel like you’re making a difference if only for that night!”
If all goes well, what would be the preferable outcome, ultimately, for True Mission?
“Providing food, clothing, and other necessities to survive just isn’t enough! We would love to provide them with resources to better their situations.  This means to help secure work, find housing, and in many cases, receive mental health or drug rehab treatment.
Everyone has a story of how they became homeless, and for many, family home-life, mental illness, and drug addiction are huge factors.
This country needs to do better. There are countless American Veterans on the streets, and that, in our opinion, is unacceptable. Growing our group and bringing awareness to these issues is our goal!”
What kinds of things do people say when they see the help they receive, from True Mission, arrive at them, when no one else will help them?
“They say “thank you, we appreciate you, God Bless you for helping us “. Many share their stories of struggle as well as their plans and goals. They let us know what they need knowing we will do our best to ask our viewers and followers for the items requested. That’s how it works! We go live on Facebook to let others know what we are trying to accomplish, and to give them a view of what it is like out there on the streets! Also, to let them see their donations going out, and making a difference!”
Is there a genuine message to those out there, who need sincere assistance from  True Mission, and to receive the warm meals that will save their lives?
“Although we see new faces all the time, we have gotten to know many by name, heard their stories, and have come to sincerely care about them. To those especially, we’d like them to know we care and will continue to help them for as long as they need it. We want them to know that their lives matter and they are not forgotten or overlooked and that our wish for them is a better quality of life.”
