The poem is centered around a woman that waits for her lover to return from fishing.

But he doesn’t return, and a wolf spirit visits her, roughly at the same time every day. She believes this is her lover’s spirit. So, she waits for the wolf to come to her, as it is her sole consolation. The wolf spirit symbolizes protection and guidance out of a dark night of the soul.

Wolf’s cry

“I listen to the wolf’s cry
As I stand here every night,
I watch the stars so bright,
Fall into the fields of gold and green,
And out of sight.

I long to feel the breezes
From the mountains not the sea.
They bring comforting whispers
Just for me.
And when I breathe in
His heart beat,
I then know his feet
Take,
The old path back to me.

Again the wolf cries,
And I hear my mother’s sighs.
As the dust
Churns up from wafting eagles’ feathers.
And my soul tethered
To the moon in its sad demise,
Casts a long shadow
Across all time.

I wait.
I wait.

A lonely state.
I hear his step,
That wolf.
He will find me,
Unseen,
Here in the field of gold and green.”
