Edition Thirty-Three – Week Thirty-Three; Unit 2:

Written by: Mercedes Barreto

Introduction

Emerging from the ever-expanding digital underground, KID NATIVE is part of a new wave of artists carving out identity through raw uploads, minimal polish, and direct-to-platform presence. With releases like “IT TAKES A VILLAGE (Side A & B)” and tracks such as “INTRO (again),” the artist positions themselves within a DIY hip-hop ecosystem where storytelling and independence go hand in hand.

Short Review

KID NATIVE’s sound sits comfortably in the realm of underground hip-hop, with a stripped-back, almost skeletal approach that emphasizes voice and intent over heavy production. Tracks like “INTRO (again)” feel less like polished singles and more like open journal entries—fragments of a larger narrative still unfolding. There’s a sense of early-stage development here, but that’s part of the appeal. The minimal listener base and raw output suggest an artist still shaping their sonic identity, experimenting with collaboration (as seen in features like Thrashmob Z and Anglea S) and exploring themes of growth, community, and self-definition. Rather than chasing virality, KID NATIVE seems to be documenting a process—an evolving body of work that feels personal, unfiltered, and quietly ambitious.

Q&A

The name KID NATIVE carries a strong sense of identity—what does it mean to you?

“The name KID NATIVE is defiantly a sense of identity! The first part, KID. Its my spirit , I enjoy not taking everything so seriously, laughing and “playing” when I get a chance. I also carry mass amounts of wonder in my mind still. Always so curious of “Why”. Also Its to pay homage to pioneers before me in the hip hop world. Like how some use “Lil” I will bear ‘Kid” .Then NATIVE. When i was younger we would go to Pine Ridge for the summers and practice ceremony. I learned a ton about my culture, values and about myself through ceremony. Those summers had a huge impact on me. So, the Native represents my culture, my values, and my resilient nature.”

When did you first start making music, and what pushed you to share it publicly?

“I first Started making music in 2016 recording verses on my iphone SE using an app called RapChat. Been investing in more gear and making music ever since! I think the possibilities is what pushed me to post publicly! What if you know?”

How important is community in your music journey?

“Community is VERY IMPORTANT! I just made an EP called “IT TAKES A VILLAGE” featuring artists from this community that has formed here in Reno NV. I don’t believe anyone can do this by themselves.”

Where do you see KID NATIVE evolving in the next year?

“In the next year i see myself evolving Into More then just Rap. I want to be an artist! a well rounded artists! Some one that can dabble in just about anything! Also finding my identity. I go back n forth with the hard, braggadocious Rap, and the Hopeless Romantic Rap. I think I know which one I’m leaning into more.”

If someone listens to your music for the first time, what do you want them to feel?

“I want them to feel good! I have songs that uplift and talk about coming from a crazy situation to a better one. I want you to vibe out and connect with that!”
