Q&A
What first drew you to music, and when did you realize it was something you wanted to pursue seriously?
“I rediscovered my love for the piano in college. It was an exploratory process for me, less intentional and more therapeutic than anything else. So it was too personal to share for many years and I kept it safeguarded. I had a huge change in mindset in the past few years that hoarding my art and music was a disservice. Art and music have saved my life and if it can help anyone else who am I to keep it to myself? That was when I knew I should take it seriously.”
How would you describe KF Gregory as an artist to someone hearing your work for the first time?
“That has been a challenge, actually. I have been struggling to define it completely. My solo piano work I describe as neoclassical, and that seems easy enough. But the full intended experience, with vocals, harmonica, piano, and synth/keyboard effects–the director’s cut, so to say–borders more on transcendental/psychedelic rock. But I have also debated calling it spirit rock, and it also contains elements of folk, of course.”

Is there a story behind your artist name?
“It provides some anonymity while staying true to myself. I did not want to put my own name on the internet, so I created a pseudonym. It felt like a happy medium between using a false name but also one that is constructed out of my real name, Kyle Gregory Flannery. In science, my name would have been KG Flannery. I flipped it around to make KF Gregory. I know it seems counterintuitive now, since people will inevitably know who I am, but that was my logic at the time. It made me feel comfortable putting myself out there in this manner, which was something that held me back for many years. I have never wanted any attention.”
What does your typical songwriting or production process look like?
“When it comes through it comes through really fast. I like to get the majority of a song written during that buzz of creative flow while it is in full force, usually within that day, Then I workshop it until I can’t think of any way of changing it further. Then it’s done. Until I change it again. But that works for me because I never actually play any piece of music exactly the same way twice. But in many other ways, I feel like I have only ever truly written one very long song, and I just carve off another piece of that eternal song and label it an individual.”
Where can we hear your music, and why should we? What makes KF Gregory and artist for the times?
“Spotify, youtube, soundcloud. I think I offer a unique new voice and style within music. I think I am emerging at precisely the right time. I’m incredibly excited by everything that’s happening in my life.”
Anything to add here?
“I just recorded my first real solo show this past Saturday, 5/2, and am isolating tracks from it. So my second single, “eyaklat stayen waheo”, is available. I think it turned out pretty well!”
