Q&A

Your music blends classic influences with a modern perspective. Which artists have had the greatest impact on your sound?

“Some of the biggest influences include David Bowie, Billy Joel, Elton John, Yes, Genesis, and U2 to name some. I was influenced by David Bowie from a young age, then expanded my musical palette to include other progressive rock artists and bands, as well. It’s the combination of all of these influences along with my classical music background that have collectively had an impact on my sound.”

You’ve described songwriting as a way of turning challenges into something positive. Can you walk us through your creative process?

“Songwriting has always been a form of therapy for me, dating back to when I was around 8 years old. I write based on what I observe in the world and how it presents a challenge to me, as many things do with OCD. I work through the negativity providing my perspective on faith and hope–the 2 things that get me through any difficulty. In the way of the creative musical process, it has changed over time, as a lot of the time I used to begin songs by writing lyrics followed by composing the music. Currently, there is no one way I write songs, as the process is different almost every time.”

As an independent artist, what challenges and opportunities have shaped your career?

“One of the biggest challenges as an independent artist has been finding ways to promote my music without the help of other band members, as well as recording in the studio without a consistent band. While these have been challenges, it has also opened the door for me to be connected with an amazing opportunity to collaborate with Billy Joel’s original band members Liberty DeVitto and Richie Cannata. This has been the highlight of my career as an independent artist and I am very grateful for this opportunity. While there are many challenges as an independent artist, there are just as many opportunities because of the unconventional nature of my musical process.”

Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or releases that you’re especially excited about?

“I have several new singles that are currently in the works, as well as music and lyric videos to go along with them. I believe these will be especially inspiring for my audience and look forward to releasing these projects throughout the remainder of the year.”

Where can we hear more, and why should we?

“You can hear more on my instagram @mattdeangelismusic, my YouTube channel Matt DeAngelis, and my music is on all streaming platforms as well.”

Anything to add here?

“I would like to thank all of my fans and supporters who have consistently followed my music!”
