Written by: Mercedes Barreto

Introduction

Music is often at its most compelling when it refuses to fit neatly into a single category, and A Project Called Love embraces that philosophy from the very beginning. The creative vision of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jay Hope, the project combines the raw energy of grunge and punk with reggae grooves, alternative rock, and melodic pop to create a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshingly original. The debut three-song single, “Smack Dab In The Middle,” released on June 4, 2026, was recorded in Cologne, Germany, with producer Julian Schneid. Featuring a rich blend of guitar, bass, drums, cello, trumpet, saxophone, organ, piano, percussion, and DJ scratching, the release reflects Hope’s willingness to experiment while staying rooted in authentic songwriting. Each track explores a different chapter of the human experience—from spirituality and self-discovery to addiction, healing, and emotional resilience—offering listeners an honest and deeply personal introduction to the project. We caught up with Jay Hope to discuss the inspiration behind Smack Dab In The Middle, his diverse musical influences, and what lies ahead for A Project Called Love.

Short Review

With Smack Dab In The Middle, A Project Called Love makes an impressive debut by blending alternative rock, grunge, reggae, punk, and pop into a cohesive and emotionally resonant collection. Rather than relying on genre conventions, Jay Hope creates songs that feel genuine, adventurous, and driven by meaningful storytelling. The title track explores spirituality and humanity’s place within the universe, while “So Sublime” delivers an honest look at the struggle of using substances to escape life’s pressures. Closing the release, “Cold Ashes” offers a thoughtful reflection on letting go after a broken relationship. Supported by dynamic arrangements that incorporate everything from brass and strings to DJ scratching, the three-song release demonstrates both musical ambition and emotional sincerity. Smack Dab In The Middle serves as a promising introduction to an artist who isn’t afraid to blur stylistic boundaries in pursuit of authentic expression, leaving listeners eager to hear what comes next.

Q&A

Your music blends grunge, reggae, punk, pop, and alternative rock seamlessly. How did you develop such a distinctive sound?

“I’ve always been a fan of incredibly diverse artists, ranging from Nirvana and Pixies to Sublime, Bob Marley, and Sufjan Stevens. With “A Project Called Love,” I have the ultimate freedom to blend all the musical influences I personally love without the constraint of sticking to a specific genre.”

As a solo project, how do you balance maintaining your personal artistic vision while collaborating with other musicians and producers?

“I wrote these songs on my acoustic guitar, so in the beginning, it was just raw chords, vocals, and lyrics. I had a clear vision of how I wanted the tracks to sound and feel. I was incredibly lucky to find a producer who fully supported that vision and helped me bring those ideas to life exactly as I imagined. Of course, during the recording process, his input, along with the unique styles of the drummer and guest musicians playing trumpet, piano, strings, and organ, naturally shaped the final sound. That is exactly what I love about music—bringing artists together to create something beautiful and beautifully unpredictable.”

What has surprised you the most about listeners’ reactions to the new music so far?

“The incredible response to the first single, “Smack Dab In The Middle,” has been amazing. I am deeply grateful and proud that people from all over the world are connecting with this release. As more singles drop and the album comes together, listeners will get to experience the full sonic spectrum of A Project Called Love. I hope we can all enjoy this creative journey together!”

What can fans expect from the upcoming singles and the full-length album planned for this year?

“Music straight from the bottom of the heart, made without any boundaries, genre restrictions, or predefined sounds.”

Where can we hear more, and why should we do so?

“You can find A Project Called Love on all major streaming platforms. Stay tuned throughout the year for more singles and the full-length album—you should listen if you want to experience honest, genre-bending music made with pure passion.”
