Q&A

For readers discovering your music for the first time, how would you describe Alice Austin as an artist?

“As an artist, I don’t feel attached to a brand or style, other than whatever inspires me at the moment. I have always been whimsical and enjoyed production as a part of songwriting.”

Your solo catalogue spans alternative rock, indie, synth pop, folk, and classic rock influences. What gives you the confidence to move so freely between genres?

“I think having the confidence in a song itself is what gives me the confidence to move so freely between genres. If you start with a song that feels authentic and your best effort, you should be able to produce it in a variety of styles, as long as you commit to it.”

Every one of your recent releases has its own unique sonic identity. How do you know when it’s time to explore a new musical direction?

“Exploring new musical directions is great for me when I start feeling like I’m ripping off my last album. It is actually much easier to create something fresh and exciting for me than to feel like I have to continue my last release and elevate it.”

You balance several musical projects, from your solo career to Black Sabbitch and Home Again Home Again. How does each one satisfy a different part of your creativity?

“Playing in a wide variety of projects is really creatively satisfying. I learn so much from my collaborators and I’m always seeing how many ideas overlap from band to band. “
