HWAM- Positive Program (Equine Therapy)

Edition Two-Week Two:

By Mercedes Barreto

What kind of benefit can animals provide to humankind? What kind of benefit do we need, that only can be found from the nurturing and a profound understanding of these loving creatures, horses in specific? Horses With A Mission tells us more about equine therapy, and how it can really help us.

What have been some recent advancements, despite the pandemic, this year 2022, that you would like to share with the world? What is in store for 2022?

“Despite the pandemic there has been a need for our program, and we have continued to grow through it all. We are excited for 2022 and for being able to help those in our community, and to getting more involved in our local community. We have started a reading program called Wood’s Reading Round Up and can’t wait for more story times. Woody is our Shetland pony who loves kids.”

Has there been extensive or noticeable progress within the Horses With A Mission program and its facility/functions? What are some new additions to the establishment? Why and how so, if applicable?

“Now, we are actually working on redoing our fencing. Our 2nd annual Easter Fundraiser is on April 2nd and we are working to raise money to complete the fence and add 6 stalls to our property. Rain is our newest full time therapy horse and a favorite among our younger riders. We are working on our Veteran Outreach program. Having Veterans come out to our facility, volunteer with the care of the horses and helping in classes, finding a sense of community and peace working with our horses.”

What are three words that describe the mood for an upcoming season of equine therapy? Why those three words, and in detail?

“Excitement, hope, and fulfillment. Here at Horses With A Mission we are excited for our spring semester of classes, and seeing all of our returning students and new students brings joy to each one of us. We are hopeful that it will be a great season of learning new skills, making new friends and reaching goals. This program gives everyone a sense of purpose, and fulfillment when watching our students grow and learn! It brings a certain peace and joy to us as we see the progress, the dedication that our students and horses put into each lesson. It’s amazing to be a part of something like this. It’s about watching a 1000 pound horse be so gentle with a young rider and watching that horse know exactly what the rider needs at the right time.”

How would you explain to someone the importance of equine therapy, especially with all of the progress made by HWAM? Who does this treatment apply to, and how is it beneficial?

“This program is beneficial to so many people, not just our students but also our volunteers. Horses have a calming effect on people that it benefits everyone that is involved. Watching one of our students walk through our gate and see their horse with a smile on their face is what makes the program so important. Seeing one of our students steer their horse around the cone for the first time without help is amazing to see. It’s also watching them get so excited to show you something new that they have learned. These are just some of the ways I would describe how important this program is. Sometimes the smallest thing is the most important, and saying walk on for the first time.”

What are some things said by previous therapy patients at the organization, who say that this experience has truly paid off in more ways than one?

“One of the most rewarding things about this program is the happy students and parents, and watching our riders jumping up and down with excitement to see their horse and tell them about their day. Most of our students we have are all from parents recommending us to their friends because they see the positive that comes from our program. Our HWAM volunteers are a family, and we are building a community here. We all work together towards a common goal. That is what makes this program work and be a success, we are all one big family working towards a common goal.”

Where can we find more information about these equine therapy programs, and why should we? What makes Horses With A Mission the place to be for therapeutic horse riding, above all?

“You can look us up on Facebook, Instagram and our website www.hwamfl.org , because our program is unique and one of a kind. Our horses and volunteers are the heart of this program and make it go round. They are truly what makes this so successful for our students.”

Anything you would like to add here?

“If you get a chance, come visit, because we would love to show you what we do and why. This program brings such peace and a sense of fulfillment and we would love to share it with you.”
