Edition Fifteen-Week Fifteen:

For my latest interview, I am very excited to talk to Julia Navarro, an actress from Alicante, Spain, who is absolutely killing it in the New York Theatre scene. I recently had the pleasure of seeing Julia in Nilo Cruz’s hit play Anna In The Tropics and was deeply impressed by her stage presence! I knew she was somebody I had to chat with, and I feel fortunate to have done so!

Julia, tell us about yourself – your life, experiences, hopes, dreams, etc.

“I am an actress born in Spain but now based in New York City. Acting and performing have always been a huge part of my life, and I feel that as an artist, I am responsible for telling stories and social change through art. I have performed in several plays, musicals, and short movies. My acting career began in Spain, then transitioned to London and, finally, New York. I am very ambitious. And I have many dreams I would like to accomplish, but I would say that joining my two biggest passions, acting and traveling, would be the biggest.”

What kind of acting/theatre do you enjoy doing?

“Everything!! I particularly enjoy doing shows and plays involving music (musicals, cabarets, dance shows).
I also love working with the camera, and I have always been obsessed with movies, though ever since I came to New York, I’ve fallen in love a little bit more with theatre.”

How does being an actor in Spain compare to being an actor in New York City?

“There is not much difference. Acting is something very universal and, at the same time, very personal, which makes it very fascinating. Also, there is a lot of Hispanic/Latino theatre in New York, so whenever I crave to see anything from my country or something Hispanic, I usually have no issue with it. There’s plenty to choose from.”

What are some of your favorite roles that you’ve played?

“It’s really difficult for me to choose! I am fortunate because I’ve had the chance to play many beautiful roles in my acting career. Still, I would say Conchita in Anna in the Tropics, Eva in The Wind of Desire, and Sor Adoración in Prisoners. I recently played a very comical role in A Sketch of New York and found it hilarious. I also recently played a role in What May Arise, in which my character was very ethereal and mysterious, very different from other roles I usually play.”

You recently closed an amazing performance of Anna In The Tropics – tell us about your character and your experience with the show.

“Thank you very much! Anna in the Tropics has been a true blessing for me. In many cases, what makes an experience unique is the people you share it with. This cast, right now, feels like family to me, and I believe they will always feel like that. Conchita is an amazing female character and a true dream for any actress. I found many similarities with her, and I believe there will always be a part of her in me. She is both tender and passionate and does not want to accept her unfair situation, so she takes some action. She does not stand there watching her life pass by. She chooses to try, to risk, to live. I’ve always liked that she and I relate to it too. I will never forget this beautiful experience.”

What are you up to right now? Where can we next see you on stage?

“I am performing in the New York Theatre Festival with the play E.G.G. with Between Us Theatre and in two musicals, Halz and Clever Girl, with Space Cowgirl Productions. Men on Boats also opens in a month! However, I am particularly enthusiastic about a personal and special project named The Wind of Desire, a one-woman show written by Spanish playwright Laura J. García and directed by Dominican-American actor/director Giovanni Marine. I am the actress in the play, and we have been working on the project for almost a year. We are very grateful because we have the support of the European Union and the Spanish Ministry of Culture in this, and we will take the play to different stages around the United States. We will also present it in Spain, where we might also do a tour. It’s an extraordinary project because it’s a biographical fiction, partially based on my life and acting journey. It deals with the struggles of a young woman starting a new life in the United States. I am very excited about this and very grateful for the opportunity to share a story that we think will inspire many people!”

Be sure to catch Julia this week in E.G.G by Emile Aslan Lacheny at the New York Theatre Festival!
