In Frank Pagliaro’s visionary adaptation of “The Cherry Orchard,” we are treated to a theatrical experience unlike any other. From the moment the curtain rises, we are transported into Chekhov’s world, where the aristocratic Lyubov Andreyevna grapples with the impending loss of her family estate. As the characters navigate themes of change, loss, and societal upheaval, the diverse linguistic landscape of the play mirrors the complexity of the human experience itself. Each of the eight interwoven languages, spoken simultaneously on stage, thread together a rich tapestry of cultural diversity and shared humanity.

Central to the production’s success is Elena Lozonschi’s breathtaking performance as Lyubov Andreyevna. Despite the diversity of languages spoken on stage, her delivery in her native Romanian is so clear and compelling that the need for English supertitles becomes almost unnecessary. Her portrayal is a testament to her exceptional talent as an actress, as she effortlessly navigates the emotional highs and lows of the role with precision and depth, breathing new life into the character and embodying Andreyevna’s complexities with grace and authenticity. We were sure to be left in awe of her skill and artistry, eagerly anticipating her next performance on the Broadway stage.

In contrast to Lyubov, Joe Staton’s portrayal of Simeonov Pischik delights is all with his charm and vibrant energy, showcasing a well delivered comedic timing and magnetic stage presence. Pischik’s financial struggles and humorous antics serve as a foil to the more somber themes of the play, providing a much needed reprieve for both the characters onstage as well as for us, the audience. Interchanging between English and French languagds with subtlety and dexterity, Staton navigates the complexities of his character with finesse, blending humor with moments of poignant reflection. His interactions infused with warmth and sincerity, create moments of genuine connection amidst the chaos of social change.

In conclusion, “The Cherry Orchard” is a triumph of multilingual theater, brought to life by a stellar cast and creative team.
